Scanning microscopy exam of hominoid dental enamel surface: Exploring the effect of abrasives in the diet

چکیده
Understanding the relationship between diet and tooth use in prehistoric species could be an important key to draw insights into their dietary adaptation as modern nutritional and biological patterns. Over the past decades, research has studied masticatory movements and microscopic wear patterns on teeth (dental microwear) from extant and extinct mammals as an approach to the feeding adaptations in an evolutionary perspective. Microwear density and length by orientation recorded on micrographs using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) on occlusal and non-occlusal molar surfaces from interspecies’ comparison show a variability regarding foodstuff, chewing mechanisms and food processing techniques in the context of the hardness of food items consumed. This paper reviews the literature related to studies of non-human primates, fossil hominids and human dental microwear. Many new questions related to scanning electron technology and its results can be drawn.

The Preventive Effect of Remin Pro and Neutral Sodium Fluoride on Erosion of Dental Enamel: An In Vitro Study
Background and Aim: Carbonated diet soda is the most common etiologic factor for dental erosion, and fluoride products have been proposed as an option for the preven-tion of that problem. This study evaluated the effect of Remin Pro and neutral sodium fluoride on the prevention of dental enamel erosion using profilometry. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted using an experimental-...

Background and Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of repeated bonding by self-etching primers (SEPs) and a conventional phosphoric acid-etchant on shear bond strength (SBS), adhesive remnant index (ARI), and enamel morphology at different debonding time points. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 120 premolars were randomly divided into six groups of 20. In the first t...

Materials and Methods: This in vitro experimental study was performed on 20 extracted premolars with no corrosion, abras...
متن کاملNew model to explain tooth wear with implications for microwear formation and diet reconstruction.
Paleoanthropologists and vertebrate paleontologists have for decades debated the etiology of tooth wear and its implications for understanding the diets of human ancestors and other extinct mammals. The debate has recently taken a twist, calling into question the efficacy of dental microwear to reveal diet. Some argue that endogenous abrasives in plants (opal phytoliths) are too soft to abrade ...
